abstract:
The collection of Gandharan art from the residence of the Malakand
Political Agent in Malakand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province,
Pakistan, consists of fifty-three sculptures collected between 1895
and the early 1930s virtually unknown to the public until recently. An analysis of the newly recovered colonial correspondence preserved
in the agency illuminates the history of the Malakand collection as
well as the processes by which early collections of Gandharan art, now in Indian and Pakistani museums, were formed.
