Metropolitan Cities, new territorial configurations and territorial hierarchies in Regions with ordinary and special Statute. The cases of Calabria and Friuli Venezia Giulia . Metropolitan Cities were introduced into Italian legislation through Law 56 in 2014 and represent something new in the national administrative system. Their leading role in the local government is still to be fully established, especially in those cases within which territorial organization did not have a historically precise and definitive hierarchy between major administrative authorities of city, province and region. In this regard, the relationship between the network of Metropolitan Cities and the traditional regional structure of Italy features a number of uncertainties. The proposed case analyses the state of the art in two peripherical regions – Calabria and Friuli Venezia Giulia – introducing some issues arising from the implementation of the new decision-making body in the local context.
