"He was a woman': Translating Gender in Virginia Woolf's Orlando"

Capitolo di libro
Data di Pubblicazione:
2011
Abstract:
The paper investigates Virginia Woolf’s activity as a translator from Russian into English, her observations on the translation process, and especially on the linguistic strategies used in her novel Orlando in speaking about the protagonist’s sex change. The main focus of the paper is based on how Woolf subtlety plays with the juxtaposition of the act of translating grammatical gender through the language of affect, thus creating a linguistic monstruosity: "He was a man".
