Abstract:
Who are the Muslims in Naples and how many of them are there? What are the city’s Muslim organizations? Where and how many mosques are there in the city? How do Muslim organizations relate to each other, and to the city? What effects has the Muslim presence had on the public spaces of the city? The aim of this paper is to present a preliminary investigation on Islam and Muslims in contemporary Naples. As a result of fieldwork underway since 2019, some trends have emerged based on the data collected so far. Fabio Amato’s research on migrants and social and urban transformations in contemporary Naples emphasizes the mobile character of city and communities, and it appears that this is also what determines how Islamic communities are organized. Compared to other territories, especially those in the northern regions, this context can be described as decentralized and mobile, so different forms of religious experience are produced, which should be examined in order to restore the complexity of Islam in Italy.
