After a brief review of the evaluation of development cooperation at the
international level, the essay describes the Italian case, the evolution of the institutional structure dedicated to the evaluation of Italian development cooperation, and the evaluation practices of Italian civil society organizations.
The essay reports the experience of the Italian Evaluation Association’s Thematic Group "Evaluating Development Cooperation". The Thematic Group was born in 2019 to stimulate a debate in Italy on evaluation theories and practices of international cooperation. The essay discusses the role of the GT in encouraging the consolidation of a culture of evaluation in the Italian system of cooperation.
