Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, in line with the educational objectives of the degree program, the student is expected to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

knowledge of the history of medieval Spanish literature, from its origins through the 15th century;

knowledge of Spanish and European history during the aforementioned period;

oral proficiency in literary topics;

comprehension and analytical skills related to the texts from the period under study.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for the following activities: understanding the literary evolution from the origins to 1500; reading, textual analysis, and critical commentary, particularly of the texts considered.

The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues related to the history of Spanish literature of the period in question, the ability to contextualize authors and works within their historical-literary framework, and the ability to carry out critical analysis of the texts included in the syllabus, with comprehension and analysis of the cultural and socio-political phenomena that produced them and of which they are an expression.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Independent judgment:

By the end of the course, the student should be able to independently approach the study of medieval Spanish texts, which form the basis of the literary evolution of the following centuries.

Communication skills:

The student who has completed the course should be able to effectively express the acquired content, also gaining familiarity with specific literary-critical terminology and basic knowledge for metric and rhetorical analysis.

Learning skills:

Knowledge of the history of medieval Spanish literature provides the necessary skills to approach subsequent exams in Spanish Literature, as well as in Romance Philology and other medieval European literatures, with a high degree of autonomy.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of medieval European history is required, in order to place the study of literary evolution in Spain from its origins within a broader context. It is useful to possess -even if rudimentary- analytical tools and to have a general overview, both historical and cultural, of the Hispanic world.

This course does not require the completion of other exams beforehand.

Teaching Methods

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test, and the final grade is expressed on a scale of 30.

The exam is conducted in Italian.

During the oral interview, the student’s knowledge of all the topics included in the syllabus will be assessed. Therefore, the student must demonstrate a solid understanding of medieval Spanish literature and of the texts listed in the syllabus, as well as the ability to place authors and works within their historical and literary context, using appropriate terminology and showing basic knowledge of metric analysis.
