Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the training course, the students' linguistic-communicative skills correspond approximately to: I year – A1/A2; II year – A2/B1; III year B1/B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is possible to carry out Erasmus+ study periods or with scholarships made available with the Agreement with the University of Sofia “St. Clement of Ohrid”, as well as benefit from scholarships during the two semesters and the Summer Schools of the Bulgarian Universities of Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo that can allow the achievement of higher levels of competence.

At the end of the three-year course, the student will acquire fundamental knowledge and notions for the historical-critical analysis of Bulgarian literature from its origins to the present day.


ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The educational path of the teaching aims to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for oral and written comprehension and communication, for the analysis and translation of texts in the language, depending on the linguistic level related to each year. Students must demonstrate that they independently master the Bulgarian language, understand, comment and translate various texts with particular attention to the linguistic structures used in the written and oral language.

During the assessment, the student must be able to frame the themes, currents, authors, works covered in the cultural and historical-literary context; analyze the most significant literary texts of the period studied in their historical, cultural, linguistic contexts.


FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgment:

The progressive mastery of the language allows the carrying out of autonomous research with awareness, the enjoyment of the cultural heritage and direct access to literary, critical and journalistic sources. The study and in-depth study of historical phases, themes, authors and works of Bulgarian literature will allow the student to acquire skills, methodological and critical tools of broad application on broader cultural horizons.

Communication skills:

Students will develop the ability to understand, communicate, comment and summarize information, ideas, problems and solutions, with particular reference to everyday life situations, and written production through the analysis of newspaper articles, song and poem lyrics, advertisements, various audio-visual recordings. The student will be able to efficiently present historical literary knowledge and critically deal with authors and works of Bulgarian literature.

Learning skills:

The solid acquisition of the linguistic bases, the maturity of judgment achieved provide students with the opportunity to develop learning skills on the fundamental methodological level to face the complexity of the next level of studies. During the lessons and group exercises, the student can put into practice the skills acquired, as well as reflect and perfect what he has learned with individual study. He/she will also have to demonstrate that he/she is able to identify, communicate and rework the information contained in medium-complex texts in Bulgarian and express personal opinions regarding the topics covered, as well as perfect what he/she has learned through personal study. The acquisition of historical-literary and linguistic skills, the corresponding maturation of critical skills, provide the student with the opportunity to develop his/her learning skills on a methodological and bibliographical level.


Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the first year. The course is aimed primarily at Italian and/or foreign students who are beginners, but also at students whose mother tongue is Bulgarian. It is desirable, although not mandatory, to have general categories of orientation in European culture for the first year. Adequate logical and grammatical analysis skills are also recommended. Knowledge of the history of Eastern Europe and the Balkans will be appreciated.


Teaching Methods

The Bulgarian language course is divided into frontal and interactive lessons by the teacher, with in-depth seminars for the different years. The texts analyzed and translated will be discussed during the course, in order to verify the ability to put into practice the theoretical knowledge acquired.

The lessons will be integrated with the annual practical exercises of readership for each year, to be considered an integral part of the course. During the academic year, students are offered the opportunity to follow the conferences and seminars held by Bulgarian teachers, guests of the University, on topics related to the topics covered in the course.

The Bulgarian literature course, which includes two parts, an institutional one and a monographic one, will be held in a conventional manner, characterized by theoretical frontal lessons in Italian, reading and analysis of literary and critical passages in Bulgarian language, group discussion:

– I year: from the origins to the eighteenth century; the nineteenth century; the twentieth century;

– II year: Bulgarian literature from the Liberation in 1878 to the end of the Second World War; New Bulgarian post-war literature.

A list of recommended readings will be provided during the lessons. In addition to the readings on topics and authors related to the course, the student will independently read three literary works from the period corresponding to his/her year of the discipline.


Assessment Methods

The Bulgarian language exam is divided into two parts: a written test and an oral test; during the lessons and exercises, ongoing tests are possible. The written test includes dictation, grammar exercises, text comprehension, composition, translation from and into Bulgarian. The written test is designed to verify the acquisition and mastery of the correct use of the main morphosyntactic structures of the Bulgarian language. The use of a monolingual and bilingual dictionary is permitted in the written test.

The written test is preparatory to the oral test. Only after passing the written and oral test of the first year of Bulgarian Language, the student can take the language test scheduled for the second year. Language in which the exam is held: Italian and Bulgarian.

Assessment criteria: The final assessment is designed to ascertain the correct acquisition of the linguistic and metalinguistic skills and abilities covered in the course. It will be assessed on the basis of the competence of the linguistic preparation, the ability to present the topics covered during the course and the accuracy in the analysis of forms and in translation. Particular attention will be given to the ability to create connections between linguistic and cultural phenomena and to orient oneself confidently within the topics of study.

The Bulgarian literature exam consists of an oral test.

Language in which the literature exam is held: Italian and/or Bulgarian.

Contents

Bulgarian Language I-II-III

TOPICS: First year: an introduction to the history and development of the Bulgarian language, general characteristics; Cyrillic alphabet. Notions of gender, number, case of nouns and adjectives. Pronouns. Definite article. Verbal system, conjugations and Tenses (present, future, aorist); Moods (indicative and imperative). The verbal aspect (perfective and imperfective). Reading of texts.

At II and III year: depth study of morphology and syntax; the verbal aspect, semantic and verbal derivation, word formation in correspondence with the theoretical and practical skills acquired during the first year. Verbal Tenses (imperfect, perfect and past perfect). Reading and translation of authentic texts. Syntax of the complex sentence. Stylistics, analysis of linguistic registers. In adition, the historical and cultural notions necessary for placing the Bulgarian language, culture and literature in the broader Slavic and Balkan context will be delivered. It will be also provided the historical-cultural notions necessary for the Bulgarian language, literature and culture in the broader European context.

1. Phonetics, phonology and morphology, the Cyrillic alphabet.

2. History of language: development from synthetism to analyticism (disappearance of nominal deflection).

3. Syntax of the complex sentence.

4. Verbal aspect; semantics and verbal derivation.

5. Reading,    analysis,    translation,    commentary     of   authentic    texts adequate on students linguistic according to the year of study.

6. Historical and cultural context; fundamental moments and figures of the Bulgarian literature of the period studied.

Bulgarian literature I-II

The general part is divided as follows:

–  I year: from its origins to the eighteenth century; the nineteenth century; the twentieth century;

– II year: Bulgarian literature from the Liberation in 1878 to the end of the Second World War; New Bulgarian Literature after World War II.

History, themes, authors and works of Bulgarian literary civilization from its Origins to the Twentieth century with reading and analysis some of the most relevant original texts. Three-year rolling course:

1. Historical and cultural context, Principal interpretative aspects of Bulgarian national historiography.

2. Essential moments and figures of the period studied.

3. Reading, analysis, translation, commentary of literary works and critical essays.

A recommended reading list will be provided during the lessons. In adition to the readings on topics and authors related to the course, the student will autonomously read three literary works of the period corresponding to his year of the discipline. Non-attending students will have to agree on the entire program with the teacher.
