Course Objectives

In our historical period, characterised from the complete loss of orientation in the existence of persons and communities, the lecture and study of a fundamental work in the history of human thought such the Nicomachean Ethic of Aristotle constitute a potent opportunity to meditate on the very meaning of the life. Students' development of critical consciousness represents a decisive moment in the course of study, and to this end the Aristotelian work, focusing on human freedom and happyness, is a very valid means to reflect on the role of culture and philosophy in the education (the greek paideìa) of the persons.


Course Prerequisites

An important prerequisite to attend profitably the course of History of Philosophy, which is dedicated to the topic of freedom and happyness and based on the lecture and study of Aristotles' Nicomacean Ethic, is useful the knowledge of the mains lines of ancient philosophy, which can be acquired over an handbook of history of philosophy.


Teaching Methods

The teachings' methode of the course of History of Philosopohy is based on three fundamental aspects integrated with each other: 1. Texts' lecture and commentary, which is always to take into account; 2. Topics' framework in the context of the philosophical tradition and his treatise in our actuality; 3. Discussion on the emerging themes each time, in order to involve actively the partecipation of the students.


Assessment Methods

It is provided an oral examen. There are not intermediate tests. Students must show to be able to develope a coherent disourse on the themes treated during the course, always making references to the text. The questions focuses on the thematics showed in the text and developed in class.

Contents

Freedom and happyness in Aristotles' Ethic. Aim of the course is to show the crucial topic of the relationship between freedom and happyness in the ancient philosophy, particularly in Aristotle. Near Plato, he was the model of the subcessives Ethics, Stoic, Epicurean, Thomistic end Modern.
