Abstract:
Found among the Papers of the Historical Archive of the Museum
of San Martino in Naples, the Diary of Rocco De Lorenzo describes the travel and war experience of a Velite of the Neapolitan expeditionary force in Russia commanded by Murat. Written by a man from a small town in southern Italy (Montemurro Lucano, in Basilicata), a very rare case compared to the origin of the best-known military memoirs of the time, the Diary clearly reveals the dimension of total rupture that the Napoleonic adventure also represents in the social history of Europe.
