L'onore e il diritto penale in Giordania: storia di una riforma non ancora conclusa

Chapter
Publication Date:
2020
abstract:
In Jordan the concept of honor is rooted in the patriarchy and in the tribal structure of a large part of society, and it deeply influences criminal law. The idea of offended honor is relevant in criminal law acting as a mitigating circumstance with regard to blood crimes (the honor crime) or justifying the rule which allowed rapists to avoid a jail term if they married the victim of sexual violence. The social changes taking place in Jordan and the growing emancipation of women bring with them a new era of reforms that mark an unquestionable progress in recognizing the autonomy and dignity of women in society.
