Abstract:
The essay intends to frame a new interpretation – albeit not comprehensive – that consists of investigating the relationship of Momus with the humanistic political theory, taken as a whole and looking at each one of its features. On the basis of this comparison it is possible to obtain insights on this work’s intentionality, starting from the adknowledgment that the text is crossed by a canvas of humanistic doctrine, which includes the underlying notions – inspired by Cicero and Seneca – of organicism, tyranny and servitus publica, as opposed to the scope of the private civis. What emerges is a highly critical text with the dominant humanistic ideology, at the borderline of desecration and mockery.
