Abstract:
Several Iron Age funerary tumuli (“kurgans”) from the area of the Eurasian steppes have revealed archaeological evidence for ancient tattooing practices in that part of the world. This paper reviews the tattoos on human bodies buried within the so-called “frozen kurgans” in the area of the Altai Mountains and discuss the evidence represented by artefacts discovered in kurgans located in the Southern Urals area and possibly interpreted as tattooing implements
