Abstract:
Vincenzo de Ritis is the author of The Arabs’ Metres, a noteworthy report on Arab prosody, presented at the Accademia Pontaniana of Naples in 1829 and published in 1833. In this work, de Ritis offers a reading of ‘ilm al-‘arud, paying special attention in the first part to the similarities between the Arabic and the Latin and Greek prosody traditions, devoting an entire section to the Hazrajiyya poem. In the second part, he presents the Arab metres through numerous poetical examples. Vincenzo de Ritis’ work, ideally located in the golden age of Arab metric scholarship, places Italy within a wider international context, in sync with the studies of G. Ewald, A.I. Silvetsre de Sacy, G. Freytag.
