Abstract:
This study analyses the communicative strategies used by the Spanish national online press in a
corpus of articles on the economic crisis in Greece. In the framework of discourse analysis of the
popularization of science, the study focuses on the lexical expressions that are meant to replace or better
explain specialized terminology; hence, on broader discourse strategies exploited to simplify specialized
information on behalf of common readers. Assuming that media filter, organize and emphasize certain
details, the press does not limit itself to transmit “the facts” but gives perspectives and images. In this way it
builds realities.
