Abstract:
This article does not intend to be a criticism of Korean scholarship. Simply, it represents a proposal for giving the ancient migrations of Korean people the same status of diaspora today reserved only to the migrations occurred after 1860. In this regard, this article aims to show, by the help of primary and secondary sources, that authentic diasporas involving Korean people have occurred since the very origin of Korean history. Through an extensive historical survey, the author demonstrates that Koreans’ migratory flows have had a sinusoidal course, with periodical peaks reached in occasion of particular (and often dramatic) circumstances. In account of this, while raising questions on the reasons of Korean scholarship's approach to the "Diaspora issue", the author thinks that even the ancient migrations should be considered diaspora, and the modern Korean diaspora actually is nothing but one of the numerous migratory “peaks” reached by the Koreans in the course of their historical path.
