Abstract:
This study analyses the Iberian Spanish subtitles of Sex Education (Netflix 2019-2024) with a
focus on indicators of specialised discourse and self-determination in the lines of the female character Jean
Milburn, sex therapist and mother of the protagonist. A parallel bilingual corpus was created, including 80
dialogic units from the first three episodes of the series and their subtitles, all revolving around this specific
character. The language expressing affective health was identified and attributed to one of the following two
macro-areas: sexual well-being and emotional well-being. Furthermore, the Spanish subtitles were analysed
using a reference framework based on the distinction between transfer and non-transfer techniques (Ávila
Cabrera 2020; 2023; Ávila Cabrera y Rodríguez-Arancón 2025). Preliminary results show that in most cases
technical terms connected to sexual well-being have been transferred into Spanish, despite a few cases of
neutralization or omission (non-transfer strategies). Furthermore, qualitative analysis highlights that loss of
specificity is frequently encountered in relation to psychological lexicon supporting female empowerment,
with a potential impact on the reception of the character of Jean Milburn by the target audience.
