• Knowledge of the history of medieval Spanish literature, from its origins through the end of the fifteenth century.
• Knowledge of Spanish and European history during the above-mentioned period.
• Oral communication skills in the field of literary studies.
• Reading comprehension and the ability to analyze literary texts from the period under examination.

Applied Knowledge and Understanding

The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools required to: understand the development of Spanish literature from its origins to the sixteenth century; read, analyse, and critically comment on literary texts, with particular emphasis on those included in the syllabus. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main issues relating to the history of Spanish literature during the period under study. They should be able to contextualise authors and works within their historical and literary framework, carry out critical analyses of the texts included in the course, and understand the cultural, political, and social phenomena that shaped them and of which they are an expression.

Making Judgements

By the end of the course, students should be able to undertake the independent study of medieval Spanish texts, which constitute the foundation for the development of Spanish literature in subsequent centuries.

Communication Skills

By the end of the course, students should be be able to communicate the knowledge they have acquired effectively, using appropriate literary-critical terminology and demonstrating a basic command of the concepts and methods required for metrical and rhetorical analysis.

Learning Skills

Knowledge of the history of medieval Spanish literature equips students with the skills needed to approach subsequent courses in Spanish Literature, as well as courses in Romance Philology and other medieval European literatures, with a high degree of autonomy.
